Out North Radio is an important part of Out North's mission
A brief history of KONR-LP:
Out North Contemporary Art House originally applied for an LPFM license in 2002, under the guidance of co-founders Jay & Gene and a handful of knowledgeable volunteers. After years of back and forth with a local church looking to do the same, we were granted permission to build Anchorage's first LPFM station in 2008! We began operating in 2010 out of a VW microbus and then relocated to the former home of Out North in East Anchorage. Shortly after launch, our entire operation was almost completely shut down by the Out North Board of Directors. But, a dedicated group of volunteers kept us legal and on-air. In 2017, Out North relocated it's operations to Downtown Anchorage for a short while before moving to a new studio space in the heart of Spenard.
From our humble beginnings, KONR-LP has grown to become a serious alternative to the drab, corporate radio which saturates Anchorage. The radio station provides Out North with a platform to support local artists, emerging talent, to host important discussions and give voice to the under-served in our community. Our current group of over 30 volunteers create 50+ hours of original content every week. We also air 40+ hours of Alaskan music - more than any radio station in Alaska.
Our entire operation is run by volunteers. Let us know if you want to get involved!
